Tesla Turbine Generator

The Tesla Turbine is a bladeless design which works using the boundary layer effect. People often confuse the Tesla Turbine with the magnet motor, because they are both related to Nikola Tesla. However, the permanent magnet generator requires no external power supply or energy except for the magnetic parts while the Tesla Turbine does require some form of external energy supply.

The Tesla Turbine is similar to more conventional engines in that it requires some form of energy input, usually in the form of compressed air, steam, oil, or any other fluid which is injected at the edge of a series of smooth parallel disks.

The fluid passes the flat discs and is exhausted through the output. The process requires no combustion making the Tesla Turbine a clean renewable form of energy. On a regular bladed turbine, energy transfer is applied directly at a perpendicular angle to the fan blades. However, on a Tesla Turbine, the energy transfer to the edges of the discs is minimal.

The Tesla Turbine works using the boundary layer effect, essentially using the adhesion forces between the moving fluid and the rigid parallel discs. This is the same effect that causes drag on aeroplanes.

Tesla Turbine Efficiency

Efficiency is one of the strengths of the Tesla Generator. Even the most efficient modern day regular piston combustion motor will not go above 30% efficiency. However, the very first Tesla Turbine models, almost now over 100 years old, delivered efficiencies well in excess of 40%.

Nikola Tesla himself even designed a Tesla Turbine car which he proposed could travel across the country on one single tank of fuel. He did actually test a prototype for the Tesla car for a week, but much like the rest of his inventions, remains a mystery.

Germano and Global Energy Technologies have, as recently as 2006, created an even more efficient Tesla Turbine which is based on the original Tesla design. The U.S. Army has also developed and built on a large scale small portable Tesla Turbines for their Soldier and Sensor Power Program.  These portable units provide electrical power for a soldiers’ personal electrical devices and are 15 times more effective than comparable battery units.

On a larger scale, Phoenix Navigation and Guidance Inc. (PNGinc), located in Munising, Michigan have developed a Tesla Turbine using  new materials such as Kevlar, carbon fibers and titanium which generates 18,000 rpm and delivers over 130 horsepower. The engine  contains 29 discs, each disc being 10 inches (25.4 cm) in diameter and uses pulse detonation combustion to produce very high efficiencies in engineering terms.

To give you some perspective, a Toyota Prius produces around 70-100 hp while a larger vehicle such as the 2012 Shelby GT500 Super  Snake will be available with an upgrade kit enabling it to produce up to 800 horsepower!

The earliest Tesla Turbines, made by Tesla himself were very efficient. A small hand held prototype produced well over 10 hp. More recently, the PNGinc model, mentioned above, produces 130 hp while the largest known turbine ever built generated over 10,000 hp!
